Loss

A set of 24 tiles torn from stoneware and softened with thick, crackling glaze. The rawness of the act distanced and abstracted in the intensity of the kiln. Loss like Clock, keeps time, the trace of a moment held beneath a layer of glaze. The piece asks what it is to fire an object - to remove it from the cycles in which it hardens, turns to dust and, with water, returns to a liquid and a malleable state again - and to vitrify it, in an alternative permanence.
