The Bread Project
a community installation
The Bread Project was a response to the lockdowns of 2021 and to the loneliness that hung over us all, even in the thickest communities. In March of that year, I baked two loaves of sourdough bread and gave them to two households, fresh from the oven. These two households each nominated a household and the next day I delivered to them. So over the course of the year a chain was built and a network of friendship resurfaced, each recipient telephoning ahead and behind. This simple gift became a symbol of hope and of kindness and as I followed the strands and structures of this muted community, the strength of its connectivity resurfaced, its rich culture began to wake with warm bread holding us all together.

The Bread Project began in Hambledon, Hampshire and found a simultaneous life in East London.
